When amateurs outperform professionals, there is something wrong with that profession. If ordinary people, with no medical training, could perform surgery in their kitchens with steak knives, and get results that were better than those of surgeons in hospital operating rooms, the whole medical profession would be discredited.

My mother used to tell us when we were kids that we needed to be quieter, that being noisy and active made older folks nervous.  As a kid brimming with energy, I didn't see what the problem was.  But now that I've passed the big 5-0, with five grandchildren (and another due in February), it's very clear to me now.  There are days when all I want is QUIET.

This week someone sent me a joke via email that included a spin-off on Aladdin's lamp.  The fellow was granted two wishes, and his first wish was that every time he needed to pay for something, he could reach into his pocket or wallet and always have just the amount he needed.

My last ramble was just the lyrics to a song you could listen to here.  Much of my ancestry is Scottish and I've been drawn almost irresistably to Celtic styles of music for as long as I can remember. But as I listened to this particular song, it got stuck in my head.  For days, when I was alone in relative quiet, snippets of that song would go through my mind.

We had all sorts of ideas about what country living would be like when we moved here in '87. Years of watching "Little House on the Prairie" had colored our view of rural life  We wanted that sense of community, where people knew each other and respected one another.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I love a good thunderstorm. Those who live in a crowded city can't possibly appreciate the beauty and wonder of a strong storm. The flashing of lightning in an array of colors, hearing the thunder rumble and roll across the hills, the smell of the air after a storm...
